Common questions

What you might be wondering

Getting started

How do we know if couples therapy is right for us?

If you keep having the same conversation and neither of you likes it, that is a reason to try. Neither of you has to be sure. The first session is a way to find out.

What happens in the first session?

A conversation, not a test. Dr. Ellison asks what each of you wants and how the pattern looks from each side, and explains the next two sessions. The Your first session page walks through the first three.

What if only one of us wants to come?

Write on your own. Dr. Ellison will tell you what she can offer. Couples sessions need both of you; she can help you think about how to ask.

Fees

Do you take our insurance?

Weft is out of network with insurance plans. You pay the practice directly, and you can ask your plan whether it reimburses you. Dr. Ellison does not bill Medicare or Medicaid.

What is a superbill and how do we use it?

A superbill is an itemized monthly receipt you can send to your plan. It carries a diagnosis code for the client named on it, which your plan will see. Your plan decides whether it pays you back and how much.

What is a Good Faith Estimate?

If you pay without insurance, you have the right to receive an estimate of what your care will cost before you start. Dr. Ellison gives it in writing. If a bill is well above the estimate, you can dispute it. The estimate is not a contract. The How fees work page has the details.

How much does it cost and how do fees work?

You get the fee for a couples session in writing before you book. The How fees work page covers insurance, paying yourself, receipts, the estimate and checking your benefits.

Can we use an HSA or FSA card?

Yes, those cards work for sessions.

What is your cancellation policy?

Dr. Ellison asks for 24 hours' notice to cancel or move a session.

Sessions

How often and how long are sessions?

Couples sessions are 80 minutes. Dr. Ellison sets the pace with you and does not promise a number of sessions. Many couples meet weekly or every other week at first.

Are you licensed where we live?

Dr. Ellison is licensed in Texas. She sees couples in the Austin office, and by video when you are both in Texas when we meet. The footer shows her license entry.

Can you see our teen?

Weft sees adults who are in a couple. If you are looking for sessions for a teen or for the whole family, write and Dr. Ellison will help you look for someone who does.

Safety

What do we do in a crisis?

Call or text 988, any time. In an emergency, call 911. This practice does not monitor messages around the clock. If either of you is afraid of the other, the Crisis and resources page lists where to call.

Privacy

What is confidential and what are the limits?

Dr. Ellison keeps your records private and shares them only as the law allows. In couples work you are both the client. Before the individual sessions she explains what stays with her and what she brings back to the couple.

“I was unsure about coming. The first message was easy to send, and the reply was kind and clear.”
