The pattern you repeat has a thread. Start there.

Weft Therapy is Dr. Mira Ellison's couples practice in Austin, Texas. Sessions help the two of you see the loop you fall into and try something different, in the office or by video.

Does this sound like you?

You do not have to agree on why you are here before you write. The first message can come from one of you.

  • You have the same argument again, in different words

  • One of you presses and the other goes quiet

  • Small things turn big quickly

  • You talk about the schedule and little else

  • You want to find your way back after a hard stretch

  • You are deciding something big and see it differently

Services

Sessions woven around the two of you

Every service is for two adults. Dr. Ellison explains the method and what it asks of you at the start.

  1. Couples therapy

Sessions for the two of you, 80 minutes each, to look at the loop you fall into and try another way through it.

A woman in glasses and a grey cardigan talks with a woman who holds her hand on a sofa
  2. Your individual session

Each of you meets Dr. Ellison alone once, early on. She explains beforehand how that conversation is handled.

Two women talk on a grey sofa, one holding a phone
  3. Before a big step

Moving in, marrying, having a child or moving cities. A few sessions to talk it through out loud, together.

A man and a woman talk at a table, seen through a glass window
  4. After a hard stretch

When trust has been hurt, or a long stretch of distance has left you careful with each other.

Two men talk animatedly on chairs in a group circle, others in the foreground
  5. Through a life change

A new baby, a job loss, caring for a parent. Changes like these move the ground under a couple.

Our approach

Therapy as a practice of weaving

A couple's pattern is a weave: his thread, her thread, and the cloth the two make. We look at the whole cloth first, so neither of you has to be the problem.

  • A tiny seedling sprouts from a mossy rock

    Seeing the pattern

Most couples fall into a loop: one presses, the other pulls back, and both feel unheard. We slow it down and name each step.

  • A small stack of smooth grey stones on sand with blurred water behind

    Setting the pace

You and Dr. Ellison agree how often to meet. She sets the pace with you and does not promise a number of sessions.

  • Sunlight pours over a grassy dirt track through green woods

    Trying it out

Between sessions you may try one small thing at home. At the next session we talk about how it went, including when it did not work.

Client stories

In the room

“Dr. Ellison let us go slowly. Nobody was rushed to explain themselves, and we never felt we were being graded.”

Sinead B.Couples client

“I expected to be told what I was doing wrong. Instead she asked what each of us needed and waited for the answer.”

Jinwoo L.Couples client

“The room is quiet and unhurried. We said things there that we had not been able to say at the kitchen table.”

Briana R.Couples client

“She explained how the sessions would go before we started, including the one each of us has alone. That made it easier to begin.”

Jim H.Couples client

“The office feels like a living room. We were comfortable, and so was the silence when we needed it.”

Jazmin T.Couples client

“She says what she sees in plain words and checks that it sounds right to both of us.”

How it works

Your first three sessions

From the first message to the third session. After that, Dr. Ellison sets the pace with you.

  • A blank spiral notebook and pen beside a latte and a laptop on a wooden desk

    Before you begin

One of you writes for both. You get the fee in writing and a link to the intake forms on the practice's portal.

  • A latte in a blue cup beside a lined notebook and pen on a wooden table

    Session one, together

Dr. Ellison asks what each of you wants and how the pattern looks from each side. You do not have to agree.

  • Overhead view of a cup of black coffee on a green notebook with a pen on a wooden table

    Session two, on your own

Each of you meets her alone, once. She explains beforehand what stays with her and what she brings back to the couple.

  • An open notebook and pen beside a navy cup of coffee on a white windowsill

    Session three, together

She says what she has seen, in plain words, and checks it with both of you. Then you agree where to start.

Common questions

What you might be wondering

Getting started

Do we both have to come?

Couples sessions are for the two of you. If only one of you wants to begin, write on your own and Dr. Ellison will tell you what she can offer.

What happens in the first session?

A conversation, not a test. Dr. Ellison asks what each of you wants and how the pattern looks from each side, and explains how the next two sessions work.

Fees

Do you take our insurance?

Weft is out of network with insurance plans, so you pay the practice directly and can ask your plan whether it reimburses you. Dr. Ellison does not bill Medicare or Medicaid. The How fees work page explains the receipt, the written estimate and the cancellation notice.
